Originally aired:
Terry Draper, founding drummer and songwriter of the Canadian band Klaatu, died two weeks ago on May 15th. Klaatu's excellent 1976 debut LP had some songs that sounded somewhat like latter-day Beatles, and their record company played up the idea that it "might be" them. The lack of information on the album cover left many record-buyers guessing. Klaatu, despite being hurt by the false Beatles allusion, survived and managed to release four more albums up until 1981. Terry wrote their best known song, "Calling Occupants From Interplanetary Craft," which was later a hit for, of all people, The Carpenters. Mr. Draper tells Klaatu's story.
